Lighthouse and Soberlink: A Beacon of Peer Support for Recovery

Reinforcing Recovery

How mobile alcohol monitoring and an innovative residential and peer support program to help ensure the continued recovery of high-level executives and others.

Continuing Care

Established in 2015 by Trey Laird, a former Wall Street trader, The Lighthouse Sober Living program offers comfort, amenities, and support to executives and other high-level professionals. Clients can include those seeking a place to recover after clinical rehabilitation or a reliable ongoing retreat from professional demands. Residents can go to work during the day and come back at night to personalized care in a homelike but elegant setting, privacy and counseling, and treatment sessions. Based in Fairfield County, Connecticut and currently serving the New York City tri-state metropolitan area, residents can choose from locations in either Darien or New Canaan.

Available to anyone in recovery and also included as part of a Lighthouse residential stay, The Lighthouse Recovery 365 Coaching provides companionship, camaraderie, and monitoring in a supportive atmosphere of mutual respect. Consisting of staff — caring professionals in recovery themselves — Recovery 365 focuses on the client’s needs while building a solid foundation for sobriety and is extensively connected to the Fairfield County recovery community. The Lighthouse will also provide a sober companion to individuals traveling on business or on another trip. Door-to-door service insures the welfare of residents and non-residents alike, allowing for secure travel to and from the destination.

Both The Lighthouse Sober Living and The Lighthouse Recovery 365 have used Soberlink as an integral part of their program since their inception. Soberlink combines a professional-grade Breathalyzer that is wirelessly connected to a cloud-based web portal. The technology uses facial recognition to confirm identity, tamper-resistant sensors to ensure the integrity of the tests and automation to create a seamless monitoring solution. They rely on Soberlink to help residents regain confidence in their own sobriety and reestablish trust with their families and society.

Challenges

The effectiveness of peer support in recovery has been extensively documented. People of the same approximate generation, socioeconomic background and interests have a much higher chance of recovery if they can relate to each other. If “you send [executives] into a facility with a bunch of 27-year-olds who dropped out of college for IV heroin use, they’re going to say, ‘I’m not as bad as them and leave,” Arden O’Connor, chief executive of the O’Connor Professional Group, which consults on various treatment plans told The New York Times in a profile of The Lighthouse.

Executives and other high-functioning individuals are also intensely responsible for the day-to-day monitoring of their concerns. While the demands of the job may be a contributing factor to their alcohol use disorder, complete removal from the situation can create an equally stressful situation or conversely, a temporary and unrealistic solution that may result in relapse once they return. Strong coping mechanisms and ongoing support must be in place before they can successfully return to their homes, jobs, and families. Without regular sobriety meetings and testing, it is all too easy to slip up when back in a familiar environment and all the attendant “triggers.”

“Soberlink is a crucial tool in The Lighthouse’s comprehensive program of recovery,” says Lighthouse CEO and founder Trey Laird. They work together to lead newly sober individuals to a life of responsibility and true happiness.

Soberlink Solutions at The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse program of recovery requires abstinence from all illicit substances and does not differentiate between degrees of intoxication. Residents and clients are free to come and go as they please, as long as they vigilantly work a program of recovery and are in communication with their sober coach. Along with providing a structured opportunity to continue their connection to their careers – and in a sense, maintain their bottom line – they “learn as they go” about new coping skills in dealing with pressures of everyday life. Through personalized coaching, mentorship and fellowship, Lighthouse 365 continue the support during and after their stay. This encompasses the full spectrum of recovery management: intensive outpatient programs, clinical counseling, medical and legal referrals, family intervention, sober companions, trainers and physical therapists, nutritional support and spiritual advocates.

The automation offered by Soberlink technology is an easy, unobtrusive and convenient way for residents, mentors and healthcare professionals to track and monitor progress. Real-time test results allow for an accurate and impartial review of a client’s sobriety so problems can be addressed as they occur, increasing chances for a lasting recovery. Regardless of where they are in the program and whether they are working, commuting, traveling, sporting or away from The Lighthouse, residents and coaches appreciate the freedom of on-demand sobriety verification.

Suggested Use Protocol

The verification of thrice-daily Soberlink monitoring, supplemented with random urinalysis, allows residents and clients of The Lighthouse to compile an accurate picture of growth in sobriety. The Lighthouse also references Soberlink as a recovery tool in its corporate presentation video.

Results

Soberlink real-time results have helped The Lighthouse avoid potentially escalating relapses through early notification regarding declining sobriety, allowing professionals to implement a recovery protocol before the situation deteriorates.

Both The Lighthouse Sober Living and The Lighthouse Recovery 365 coaching and monitoring have enjoyed extremely high success rates. Implementation of Soberlink for every resident and client is a major factor in the successful recovery of alumni. “We rely on evidence-based tools like Soberlink because they work,” states CEO and founder Trey Laird.
